Mountaintop Montessori, a private independent school, is currently seeking qualified candidates to fill a part-time classroom assistant position for our Upper Elementary classroom (4th through 6th grade mixed age classroom) during our 2025-2026 school year.

Mountaintop Montessori provides the greater Charlottesville community with an exceptional and authentic Montessori education, serving children and families from infancy through adolescence. Our campus is home to year-round programming in which children thrive through experiential learning, interactions with the natural world, and collaborative discovery. Our campus is a 9-acre classroom including multiple gardens, a greenhouse, a certified wildlife habitat, and an art studio.

About the Position
The desired profile for this position is someone who has experience working with children, possesses strong classroom management skills, and has the ability to guide children through redirection and affirmative language. An open mind, a sense of humor, and flexibility are also highly desired. This position assists with the Upper Elementary classroom, consisting of students ranging in age from 9 to 12 years.
This position begins mid-August and is contracted through early June with the potential of continuing into the next school year.
Shift: Monday-Thursday, 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM, with meeting attendance (4:00 PM - 5:30 PM) two Thursdays per month
Pay: $19/hour
Elementary Assistant Staff is responsible for (but not limited to) the following duties:
Being punctual and having consistent work attendance
Developing sound relationships with all students
Ensuring children are supervised at all times
Watching children to ensure a safe environment during free play, lunch periods, transitions, and dismissal as needed
Reinforcing classroom and school ground rules and maintaining consistency in enforcing them
Assisting with spelling practice
Classroom maintenance/cleaning
Taking charge of the classroom when the Lead Guide is out of the room or absent
Reading and implementing Mountaintop Montessori’s policies and procedures
Abiding by laws and regulations established for private schools by the VCPE and the school’s accrediting organizations
Qualifications:
At least a high school diploma (Bachelor’s preferred)
Previous experience working with children
Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate maturity in managing complex situations
Willingness to learn about and implement Montessori philosophy and practices
Must have regular, reliable attendance in performance of essential job functions
Proficiency in working with computers
As a condition of employment, a criminal background check and fingerprinting are required.
